Speech Therapy
in the Vietnamese Community

The majority of our clients at Gift of Speech are members of the Vietnamese community. This means we are particularly specialised when it comes to Vietnamese language barriers, common speech issues, and cultural differences. We love working with Vietnamese children and are familiar with how to work alongside them to overcome common communication issues.

PEERS®

Social Skills Group for Adolescents

PEERS® is a 16-week social skills program for teens in high school and late-primary who are interested in learning new ways to make and keep friends. During each session, teens are taught important social skills and are provided with opportunities to practise these skills during socialisation activities. Parents attend separate sessions and are taught how to assist their teens in making and keeping friends by providing feedback through coaching during weekly home practise tasks.

This evidence-based program may be appropriate for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Anxiety, Depression or other social and behavioural disorders.

Teens will learn about:

  • Conversational skills
  • Appropriate use of humour
  • Electronic communication
  • Handling arguments and disagreements
  • Being a good host during get-togethers
  • Being a good sport
  • Changing a bad reputation
  • Handling rumours and gossip
  • Handling rejection, teasing and bullying

Background

PEERS® was developed and certified from UCLA by Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson.
